Katy on…dog tags

Also, we have probably purchased at least six of those aluminum ID dog tags from Pet’s Mart or the Doggy Health Food Store  at about $6 each  in the last 2-3 years. They just don’t last and the info becomes blurred, and is hard to read, anyway.  Plus you just can’t put much on them.  We found a better product!  www.BoomerangTags.com has a large variety of deeply etched  stainless steel and plastic tags that are guaranteed for ten years.  We bought  stainless steel, 1″ round tags for the  Apsos, and they are indeed easy to read, and etched on both sides.  On one side I have their name, our name, address, phone # , town and state.  On the other side it says “IF I’M OUT, I’M LOST” , our Cell phone # and REWARD.  I paid $29. for the three tags, postage paid.

Katy on…Through A Dog’s Ear

Hi Debby,
I’ve been meaning to write you….

For Christmas, the Apsos got some Dog Music. You may have heard of it, as it is produced in Boulder.
It’s called Through a Dog’s Ear”. “Music to Calm Your Canine Companion is the first CD in a new series of music clinically demonstrated to deeply relax dogs. Based on pioneering research into how the canine nervous system responds to sound, psychoacoustic expert Johua Leeds and concert pianist Lisa Spector have created music that is twice as effective as conventional classical selections for reduction of canine anxiety behaviours.  Research conducted with 150 dogs showed that the psychoacoustically designed classical piano arrangements on this CD induced calmness in 70 percent of dogs in shelters or kennels and 85 percent of dogs in households.”  There is a book that explains the theory and how this all came about, but each CD also comes with a little booklet that is very informative and gives lots of advice for their use, i.e., Separation Anxiety, Thunderstorm, Fireworks, Excitement with Visitors, Boarding, etc.

We bought three of the CD’s:  one just for the dogs (which is deeply calming for dogs and people, too), one for the whole household (which is upbeat and lively, and is lovely for background music without putting you to sleep) and one for the car (which promises to relax the dogs and not put the driver to sleep!).  We’ve used them since Christmas and find that they really do seem to relax the dogs.  I play the Dog’s Ear CD whenever we leave the house, and they seem to just relax and go to sleep when we’re gone.  I play the one for the whole household when I’m painting, and it’s very conducive to creative work, while keeping the dogs happy (and the birds, too!).   We got the one for the car, not because we have any specific car issues, but Wyatt does  get car sick occasionally.  Hard to tell yet, but whenever we’ve played it, he’s been fine, no anxiety and no car-sickness.  Much better than drugs! They are $14.95 each, but they have “deals” which is how I bought the three CD’s in one package.

Puppies doing great in new homes

Just heard from Rod:

Karma and Dawa are doing great, he loves playing with her and it does not seem like he is being to rough.  She will charge across the room towards him at full speed and he just jumps into the air and then chases her, so all is going well with them.  It is fun to just watch them in their antics!  She is going to school with him today; so we will see how well he remembers his commands with her present.  Great seeing you again, take care.

See Dawa’s page.

Julie got this regarding Kenzie:

The puppy loves it outside. Her favorite thing is to chase the dead leaves, which is even more fun if the wind is blowing. We have gone 3 days without any indoors accidents.  In fact, the night before last she went to the back door and whined at it–pretty good. The nights are getting better.  She only whines when she needs to go out and immediately after we put her back in the crate. We have chew toys, but she is still looking to gnaw on furniture and our fingers.  She is scolded whenever we catch her at it, but I am not crazy about all the biting of feet when we walk.
Can already see how much we will miss her when we are in Hawaii!

Ginny sent some good info

How many of these did YOU know about?

A sealed envelope – Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a
knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed.
(hmmmmmm…)

============================================

Use Empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords . It keeps them
neat and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

============================================
For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put
Dawn dish washing liquid in it. Pour it all  over the steps. They won’t
refreeze. (wish I had known this for the last 40 years!)

============================================

To remove old wax from a glass candle holder , put it in the freezer for
a few hours. Then take the candle holder out and turn it upside down. The
wax will fall out.

=========================================
Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag, dipped
in baking soda. Comes off with little effort (elbow grease  that is!).

===========================================
Permanent marker on appliances/counter tops (like store receipt
BLUE!) rubbing alcohol on paper towel.

========================================
Whenever I purchase a box of S.O.S Pads , I immediately take a pair of
scissors and cut each pad into halves . After years of  having to throw
away rusted and unused and smelly pads, I finally decided that this would
be much more economical. Now a box of S.O.S pads last me indefinitely!
In fact, I have noticed that the scissors get ‘sharpened” this way!  It also sharpen the scissor.

=========================================
Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little hydrogen
peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works
every time! (Now, where to put the body?) LOL

==================================
Use vertical strokes when washing windows outside and horizontal
for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has the streaks.
Straight vinegar will get outside windows really clean. Don’t wash windows
on a sunny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak.
============================================
Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely
light scent in each room when the light is turned on.

============================================
Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will
smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels
and linen.

=============================================
Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at leas t 3
hours prior to burning.

=============================================
To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the
flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt
and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! Works like a charm!

=============================================
To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or
two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to
a boil on stove top.

==============================================
Spray your TUPPERWARE with nonstick cooking spray before pouring
in tomato based sauces and there won’t be any stains.

=============================================
Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will
keep for weeks.

=============================================
When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the
corn’s natural sweetness

=============================================
Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half, and rub it on your
forehead. The throbbing will go away.

=============================================
Don’t throw out all that leftover wine: Freeze into ice cubes for future
use in casseroles and sauces …….. Left  over wine? What’s that? 🙂

=============================================
To get rid of it ch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area
and you will experience instant relief.

=============================================
Ants, ants, ants everywhere …. Well, they are said to never cross a chalk line. So,
get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants  tend to march. See for yourself.

============================================
Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still,
leaves a lovely smell to the shine.

============================================
When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to
tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, and
then pull it  off. Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily.

=====================================
Now look what you can do with Alka Seltzer……..
Clean a toilet.
Drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes, brush and flush.
The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous China ..

============================================
Clean a vase.
To remove a  stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill with water
and drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets.

==================
Polish jewelry.
Drop two Alka Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the
jewelry for two minutes.

=============================================
Clean a thermos bottle.
Fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka Seltzer tablets, and let soak
for  an hour (or longer, if necessary).

================================== ===========
Unclog a drai n.
Clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka Seltzer tablets down the
drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar. Wait a few minutes,
and then run the hot water.

Dawa goes home

Once again, the hand-off happened in the Park-n-Ride lot. Seems a bit clandestine… Karma is quite stunning with scattered black tipping on pale silver gold hair. His head type classic. Best of all, he recognized me! And was happy to see me. Often dogs that formerly lived with me will acknowledge me, pay respect. But, then it’s as if they’re thinking Wait! I’d rather stay with this person! I honor that.

I enjoyed talking with Rob, hearing about Karma, his lifestyle and what he’s learned. Can’t wait to hear about the antics of Dawa and Karma, along with photos. Here’s hoping last night – Dawa’s first night away from her birthplace…can I really use that word…she came into this world one glorious moonlit night at Animal ER. How ’bout her first night away from her sister and extended pack.
