Amusing encounter

Two of the Gompa dogs live with Gigi. She recently sent the following:

My daughter Whitney, who moved to Portland from Ohio a few months ago, and I were in Dundee, OR, doing the winery circuit, and we stopped at the Dundee Cafe for lunch.  We had the boys with us at an outdoor table and of course everyone was saying “How Cute.”

A couple came up and asked about the dogs, and I said they were Tibetan Apsos, similar to Lhasas, but a bit different, which I find easier than saying Gompas because people go “Huh?”.  And the husband was looking a bit askance, and asked where they came from.  I said one had come from a Buddhist retreat in Virginia, and the other from a breeder in Colorado.  So the wife says “Debby Rothman?”

They are Jan and Larry Bruton, who have Lhasas from you but no Gompas.  *Very* small world!

Small world, indeed! Slight correction, Jan and Larry have Lhasas, but not from me. Jan judged the breed recently in MN and is currently secretary of the American Lhasa Apso Club. Larry is former president of ALAC.

Aaron and Taschi-Deleg

Aaron – Champion Byrnwood Fleetfire Primal Fear – will be nine years old in October. Taschi-Deleg – a Gompa dog – was ten years old this past April. Elizabeth send these photos, showing the two sleeping together on the couch and the bed. Both male dogs lived in my kennel until each contributed to their perspective breeding program.

The last time I saw Elizabeth, she shared some fascinating information regarding hair analysis on her horse Jigs. Through this analysis, the lab was able to pinpoint areas that needed to be addressed. Too much of this. Too little of that. She didn’t know if the lab does canine hair analysis, but was very impressed with their professionalism.

Anal Glands and yellow foam

Alma commented, “One more thing,  when I had J-Block the groomer would always say she emptied the sack in the back.  What is that,  is that something to be done or because Rhoadie is neutered, that is not necessay?   This  groomer says nothing about that.” And, “Roadie  is not eating as much, I think his stomach was a little upset yesterday as he brought up the yellow foam, and his  bowels were a little loose.   I saw him also scoot on the floor like he was itching back there.”

Read more about anal glands, including a description on how to express them yourself. Roadie being neutered wouldn’t affect his anal glands. There are different opinions among groomers (and veterinarians) regarding routine expression of anal glands. I always express anal glands when bathing a dog. Carol, my fellow groomer, only expresses anal glands if asked. Since Roadie is scooting, ask your groomer to express the glands each time he’s bathed.

It is not uncommon for dogs to throw up yellow foam. I don’t worry when my dogs do this. When I cared for Vickie’s Dante last summer while she and Alan went on vacation, she sent along milkbone style treats with instructions to give him one a couple of times a day ‘to keep away the yellow foamies.’ Maybe she can comment about that.

The obvious…or not

Sometimes, I forget how much I know about dogs, dog shows and animal husbandry. What’s obvious to me, isn’t necessarily obvious to others.

There is an AKC process called a Bench Show Committee. Every all-breed show has one. The officers of every specialty club are the Bench Show Committee. The Bench Show Committee addresses complaints (bad sportsmanship, foul language, threatening a judge, etc.) with a trial at the show. The verdict is sent to AKC. AKC determines the punishment, which usually includes a fine and suspension of AKC privileges anywhere from 3 months to lifetime. Five years is the average.

In an effort to address the issue of misuse of motels/hotels by exhibitors, AKC encourages the use of the Bench Show Committee to discipline those exhibitors. The all-breed clubs encourage local motel/hotel owners to contact them if abuse of the motel/hotel facility occurs. This is actually a ‘selling’ point when local clubs are soliciting motels/hotels and rates for show exhibitors and includes barking dogs, not cleaning up after your dog/s and destruction within a room. The trial happens at the dog show. If you’re found guilty by the Bench Show Committee, co-owners are effected as well regardless of if the co-owner/s was at the show.  AKC privileges include being able to breed, register and show dogs as well as judge dogs.

Here’s what is printed in nearly every premium list (the information packet on a dog show), usually on the page listing the motels/hotels.
