A Week at the National in Houston, Texas

Julie wrote a fun article about the National Specialty, which was published in the Twin Cities Lhasa Apso Club’s latest newsletter.

Julie on…being a Breeder!!!

Debby and I have spent a lot of time on the phone to each other the past week, boosting each other and commiserating with each other over our lives with dogs. Sometimes we wish we could change things but in the end we know that dogs will always be a very important part of our lives.
After a very long day that turned into a longer night waiting for puppies to arrive, a holiday season based around going to the vet – no way a little snowstorm wasn’t going to stop me! – I thought the following article was most appropriate.

A Breeder (with a capital B) is one who thirsts for knowledge and never really knows it all, one who wrestles with decisions of conscience, convenience, and commitment.  One that shares this knowledge and guides those interested.
A Breeder is one who sacrifices personal interests, finances, time, friendships, fancy furniture, and deep pile carpeting! She gives up the dreams of a long luxurious cruise in favor of turning that all important show into this year’s “vacation”.
The Breeder goes without sleep in hours spent planning a breeding or watching anxiously over the birth process, and afterwards, over every little wiggle or cry.
The Breeder skips dinner parties because that litter is due or the babies have to be fed at eight. She disregards birth fluids and puts mouth to mouth, to save a gasping newborn, literally blowing life into a tiny helpless creature that may be the culmination of a lifetime of dreams.
A Breeder’s lap is a marvelous place where dogs of proud and noble heritage often snooze.
A Breeder’s hands are strong and firm and often soiled, but ever so gentle and sensitive to the thrusts of a puppy’s wet nose.
A Breeder’s back and knees are usually arthritic from bending and sitting in the whelping box, but are strong enough to guide that new little pup to maturity.
A Breeder’s shoulders are often heaped with responsibility, but they’re wide enough to support the weight of a thousand defeats and frustrations.
A Breeder’s arms are always able to wield a mop, support an armful of puppies, or lend a helping hand to a newcomer.
A Breeder’s ears are wondrous things, sometimes red (from being talked about), or strangely shaped (from being pressed against a phone receiver). Often deaf to criticism, yet always fine tuned to the whimper of an anxious puppy.
          A Breeder’s brain
is foggy on faces, but can recall pedigrees faster than an IBM computer.
The Breeder’s heart is often broken, but it beats strongly with hope everlasting…….and it’s always in the right place! Oh, yes, there are breeders, and then, there are Breeders!!!

Let it snow!

Sitting in the library at my computer, looking out the window, the snow is, once again, gently falling. It has indeed been a White Christmas. The hustle and bustle of the season is over for me, although I am working a few odd days…much to my relief actually. It feels good to return to ‘normal’, if my usual hectic life can be called that.

Nate started his road trip this morning, taking Sleek Sue to Tucson. No, she’s not a girlfriend! She’s the Road Trippin’ car I purchased almost two years ago. Suzanne remains home with me, decked out in snow aggressive tires, 10 dog crates, ready for a cruise to the grooming shop later this morning. Formerly the Road Trippin’ car, Suzanne became my work car after she turned 200,000 miles. Ah! My favorite! I love old cars. Comfortable Cars with history. Cars with character. Cars I don’t have to keep clean for the rest of the family.

Like dog names, my cars are named with a theme. A Subaru theme. Suzy was my first Subaru, my first 4-wheel drive of my very own. Prior to Suzy, I refused to part with my beloved front-wheel drive Volvo station wagons. Not having a 4-wheel drive always at my finger tips can be a bit of a problem where I live! So, along came Suzy. She was a brown 1981 hatchback with a price tag of $600 that I drove for four winters. And I do mean I drove her. Rick refused to be seen in Suzy, that’s just how ‘comfortable’ she was. He said he’d need either a brown paper bag or a fake nose and glasses if he were driving Suzy.

How this post warp from my original intention of posting photos of Ella in snow to reminiscing about cars? Ah. Well. So be it!

Melissa sent some great photos of Ella, a Sadie/Damon daughter, playing in the snow.

Julia’s Christmas card

Just had to share Julia’s Christmas card!

julias2007card.jpg

Kathy’s wee fire…

More excitement than I care to experience…last night we had
finished supper, loaded the dishwasher, stove was completely turned
off–no burners on/etc. and I had wiped off the range.  As Joe was
drying the stove with a dishtowel…WHOOOOOSH!  A loud popping and whirring sound came from the stove, then flames leaped up from the oven door and stovetop grill.  A nasty acrid smell filled the room
and quick acting Joe was out the backdoor cutting the power off to
the range.

Our stove is well over 20 years old and it appears to have blown a
circuit or interior mechanism so off to Sears for big appliance
shopping this morning.  Not my idea of Christmas fun, but thank God,
because Joe acted fast, we didn’t have a major disaster on our
hands.  I am meal planning around our crockpot, microwave, gas grill
and camp stove!!  It could be after the holidays before hook up.
Let’s see, I recall apt. sharing with girlfriends and we used to
grill a mean cheese sandwich using foil and a steam iron….if I can
even locate my iron…

Since the wee fire destroying the stove, we have improvised!!  Notice I am dressed in layers to keep warm!! Dinner is served on the patio, complete with lantern light and 3 smiling dogs!!

The new stove arrived yesterday and I am back in business–note Pete checking it out!

I have “customers” waiting for Kathy’s Bones from Heaven Bakery to
open!!  The 3 amigos have been begging for some home cookin’ on the
new stove!!
