Puppy Protection Bill introduced in Colorado

Another serious post., a mix of correspondence received in the past several days. Again, no graphics. At least it’s colorful as I try to acknowledge each person’s input. It’s important to hobby breeders and ‘trickling down’, important to purebred dog owners. Please educate yourself and use your voice in our democracy!

Slowly, slowly, around the country hobby breeders continue to lose rights. Colorado Representative McCann has introduce a bill to Colorado’s legislature. And Lawmakers Trying To Eliminate Puppy Mills.

Kathy wonders…

Debby,
Re:  aforementioned Dog Bill …isn’t this just more tampering by the
govt. into responsible/caring breeders’ lives and is it a forerunner
to the CA law that wanted all dogs/cats to be neutered or have special
permits??  Puppy mills are horrible but I thought they were subject to
the laws enforced by the Humane Society?

Thanks,
Kathy

From Vickie…

As you may or may not be aware, CO House of Representative Members Randy Fisher and Elizabeth McCann have sponsored a bill that would limit the amount of dogs one could keep and breed.  While the number — 25 — doesn’t affect most of us, once this legislation is passed, it can be modified with no further input from the state’s constituents.

Please take a moment to read the action alert at this link … HB 1172 Action Alert … as it contains information on the bill and the ramifications should it be passed.  Towards the end of the article, there is a link entitled “TAKING ACTION” which opens up a form that can be used to contact your representative.  The form also contains pre-written paragraphs which can be added to the letter (just click on the red arrow) and there is room to add your own thoughts/opinion.  When completed, it can either be emailed or printed out and send by snail mail (preferred method … we need to flood them with paper).

The animal rights movement is here in Colorado and working to erode your rights as a pet owner (whether you breed or not).  It is imperative that we unite and make our voices heard.

Please forward to all your dog folk and ask them to oppose this legislation as well.

As representative to CFDC for the Lhasa Apso Club of Central Colorado, I received this:

The Colorado Federation of Dog Clubs wants you to be aware of a bill going through the Colorado House. We are very much against it. Find out why….

 http://www.codogfederation.org/LEGISLATIVE%20ALERT.pdf

More food for thought… Vickie points out Lhasa Apsos are on the Decline a whopping 80% in the past decade, according to AKC.

As Faye points out, Canada isn’t immune either!

Pardon the mass sending but this is too important to miss.  To think that we are so close yet still so far away…..

Debby asks you to vote

This post is dry, no pretty graphics. This is serious stuff. Please read the entire post. The animal rights people continue to pound away. Several weeks ago I drafted a post regarding an article on the Los Angeles Times blog, titled LA Unleashed. Not breaking news to dog show people, PETA wants airing of the Westminster Kennel Club dog show canceled. You can express your opinion by voting. So far the nays – dog breeders promote responsible pet ownership and dog shows are fun to watch – far outweigh the yahs. 97%.

And hitting right here in Colorado:

From Marie Zimmerman:

I heard at BSKD last night that PETA is expected to show up big time at the Cluster.  Could be an idle threat or not.

What they told us at BSKD:

1) It is illegal in Denver County (where the show is) to leave a dog in a car for any period of time unattended.  I KNOW people have done so in the past.  PETA is threatening to break windows to free dogs this year.  Who knows whether they will or will not.

2)Don’t have a tag with your dog’s name on his/her crate, they open it and say, here Yankee, come with me.

3) They are cutting locks off crates.  The message is don’t leave your dog unattended period.

4) Have your dog’s rabies tag or papers with you.

This is just what they told us.  They said expect to be harassed and do not leave your dog unattended in a crate in either the grooming area or in your car.

Cindy was applying for a variance in Weld County so she could have 8 dogs on her 20 acres.  200 of the PETA people showed up at the hearing and she was denied last week.

Just information for you to consider.

Did you read that?! Weld County is an agricultural county. The population is growing because of urban sprawl, but it’s an agricultural county. 200 PETA people showed up at a variance hearing! Denied a variance for 8 dogs on 20 acres?

Then, a few days ago Ginny sent this:

Veterinarian speaks out on PETA & Westminister

Thank you Libbye Miller DVM for stating:

“Adorable mixed breeds” get cancer, epilepsy, allergies, heart
disease, and orthopedic problems just like purebreds. I see it every
day in my veterinary practice but mixed breed dogs aren’t tracked like
the purebreds so they have a reputation as “healthier” that is actually
undeserved in many cases.”

It is so sad that a lot of folks, including young veterinarians these
days, buy into the “hybrid vigor” baloney. The vet schools have been
infiltrated by the Animal Rights Extremists, who are teaching them this
junk science in order to push their agenda.

All animals have a certain amount of genetic load, which is to say
there is absolutely no animal without some genetic problem of some sort
of another. Know anyone who wears glasses? Has allergies? Thyroid
problems? Weak knees? Flat feet? A skin condition? Arthritis? A gap
between their front teeth? These are all genetic imperfections.

No human is genetically “clean.” Neither is any individual of any
species on earth. So this idea that dogs should not be bred because
they might have a genetic problem, and that breeders are somehow “evil”
for breeding them, is ridiculous. Every single individual of every
single species has at least a few genetic conditions.

To use PeTA’s logic, all breeding of all kinds (including having human
babies) should halt immediately. And to be honest, Ingrid Newkirk (the
woman who founded PeTA) does believe exactly that. She thinks that
humans should become extinct, along with dogs, cats, etc. This
ridiculous scenario is precisely what she would like to see happen.
So folks, if that is what you want…if you agree with Ingrid
Newkirk’s whacky views, send your hard earned money to PeTA. They will
help to ensure you are not able to own a dog or cat or hamster or any
other pet in the future. They will see to it that you can’t eat meat or
fish or eggs or any type of animal-based nutrition. They will work to
shut down places like Sea World, the zoos, etc. so you cannot observe
the many wonderful animals on the Earth. Eventually, once they
accomplish these things, they may turn their efforts to making it
illegal for humans to procreate.
If you don’t agree with their extremist views, wise up and start
supporting those who truly do love, care for and enjoy interaction with
other species here on our little blue planet.

The fanciers of the breeds, those you see exhibiting their dogs at
Westminster and other dog shows, work very hard to eliminate serious
genetic conditions. They screen their breeding stock with every
available test. They research pedigrees before breeding into other
lines, to check for similar clearances in those animals. They
contribute money to research organizations to further the work being
done to track down genetic problems. They contribute blood, cell
samples, etc. from their own animals to help with DNA and genome
studies. They have made great progress so far, and they continue to
work hard at it.

Are there unethical breeders? Certainly, there are. Just as in any
group of humans, you will find the good and the bad. United States VP
Elect Joe Biden, for example, managed to find a not so good one when he
got his new German Shepherd puppy. I don’t know who did his research
for him, but they obviously didn’t do their homework if they were
looking for a responsible breeder. Joe has the right to get his dog
from whomever he wishes, but if he was trying to set an example of
purchasing from a responsible hobby breeder he went off the track this
time. That’s too bad, but it was his choice.

Unfortunately, breeders like that may be a lot easier to find because
of their high volume and high profile. If you are looking for a nice
family pet from a breeder who will be there for you forever, you need
to do due diligence. You won’t get that from a pet store. You won’t get
that from the guy selling dogs out of his pickup truck in the WalMart
parking lot. You won’t get that support from a high-volume breeder,
either. Yes, it takes a little more time and effort to find someone who
really cares and does all the work to breed the healthiest, happiest
puppies possible and then stands behind those puppies.

This is a living being that will be part of your family, hopefully,
for many years. Isn’t it worth a bit of effort to find a breeder who
will be there for you and that puppy forever?

And guess what? Shows like Westminster are a very valuable resource
for finding breeders who do care and who use the best possible
practices, as well as for learning more about the various breeds.

Bravo to USA Network for broadcasting the Westminster Kennel Club show
all these years. May they enjoy continued success through the ongoing
inclusion of such programs. I will be eagerly watching this year’s
show!”

Monte

Saturday night, coming home from dinner at the Kitchen Upstairs in Boulder, we drove by Golden. One of my all-time favorite dogs lived most of his life in Golden. Toby was a handsome brown Tibetan Terrier. I groomed him every two weeks. He grew to be old, but not old enough. Thinking of him I got teary-eyed. It was dark, so I was surprised when Rick asked me why. I wondered how he knew. He said tears glisten in the dark! I may have done a post about Toby and yarn… I have a heart-shaped bookmark made from Toby’s hair.

Soon I get to meet Monte. Here’s what Linda shared:

Hi Debby,  I wanted to let you know I found a Wonderful TT – He is from the same Breeder that I got Toby from – Toby’s Niece Pemba was the Mom!  Daddy was Vinci – a TT from Italy.  There just happened to be an available baby – and I decided to go ahead and take him

I named him Malishar Kawagebo White Snow Mountain – Monte.  I would love for you to meet him and discuss grooming.  I am going to Show him – or should I say someone is going to show him.
