Tibetan dog art

The info on the artist of this piece is quite interesting!  Clicking on her name – Constance Coleman –  will bring it up.  Then click on Original Works on the second page … more dogs of Tibet!

Riley

It’s hard to believe, but I actually have friends outside of Dog People. Melissa is one…although it was through swimming… Anyway, recognizing kindred spirits, initially she invited Rick and me to an Underground party. It feels sorta like a kid’s treehouse club. Fun! Melissa, Bryce and Paul went to high school together in Houston and somehow migrated to the Denver area. Not as a group, but individually. Melissa and her husband Kevin live about 10 minutes from our house. It’s great to have spur-of-the- moment friends. Not only is it rare to find good friends as couples, but even more rare that we’ve all done things in assorted pairs or trios. Kevin took me to his yoga class. Rick, Melissa and I recently went to the contemporary art museum in Denver. Kevin, Rick and Melissa saw the Amish quilt exhibit together. The list goes on and on because we see them nearly every weekend. Usually for cocktails and a game of dice or dominos.

But wouldn’t ya know. Melissa currently has two dogs. There were three until last year when Maggie was euthanized. Dogs. There’s that common thread again! Maggie was a Golden Retriever. As is Shiloh. Riley is a Papillion. He recently made the local paper. Here’s what Melissa sent:

Our neighbor, Chris Coyle, is a very talented artist. Sometimes, when Riley is feeling especially fractious, he escapes to Chris’s, where he plays happily with their two dogs. Chris decided to capture Riley on canvas, and here is the result. Enjoy his fabulousness, he does.

Kathy wonders..

Hmmmmm, what’s next?  Is this an ingenious plan to prevent doggy
dumping in shelters because their owners can no longer care for them?
Have you seen pets used like this in the States?  I guess this is
another way of the whole family pitching in to add more money to
struggling household budgets.  Are you finding new statistics on the
overall effects of the economic crisis on dog ownership?  What does
history tell us?  What happened with pets during the Great Depression?

Faye’s Lennie

Remember late last year when Faye sat at home during Canada’s Thanksgiving, waiting for someone that never showed up to look at Lennie? Rude was the appropriate word for that instance. But, as with most things in life, things sort themselves out…usually better than imagined. Looks like that’s the case with Lennie.

Faye shared:

This lovely lady and her husband drove 9 hours to pick up Lennie in Calgary this weekend.  Lennie reminds me very much of MB’s Riley but not quite as bad – she is timid, very shy and startles easily but her inate curiousity will overcome most things except for her shyness of strangers.  When we met Saturday morning we sat in the hotel lobby in Calgary for 2 hours just visiting – Lennie hung out on my lap or at me feet and showed no real interest in Kathy at all.  As time drew to close – they had a long drive ahead and I had grooming to do – Kathy picked Lennie up and while I could tell she was not pleased about it she did not do the typical OMG get away from me lean that she does when anybody else picks her up.  I am sure the other dogs in her house will help her to settle in also.

From Kathy to Faye (not our Kathy, but hopefully this Kathy will join us and become our Canadian Kathy!):

Faye: How did you come out on the dog show? Wish I could have stayed. Here are a couple pictures of Lennie. I am really enjoying her.The picture of me holding her in the chair was Sun at about 11:00 am. She decided it was ok to get on my lap Then my black one decided that she needed up too! She hasn’t warmed up yet as well to my husband or son. She stays close by me and comes for hugs and kisses now! I have been taking her for walks with the other dogs without the leash . You have her trained really well. She always follows and stays really close. Today she enjoyed a run in the snow with the other dogs. She really got excited! Each day she is showing more spunk and warming up more. So I think she will be fine. She is just a reserved little girl. I will schedule her surgery in the next couple of weeks on one of my long stretches off. I will keep you posted how she is doing. I was really nice meeting you also. Kathy

Doggy Valentines

Kathy sent…
And what does your Valentine say??

Mine says:  Give me a smooch, you sweet old pooch!

Okay, I know this is a little over the top!  But what better way to celebrate our beautiful dogs on Valentine’s Day!
Take one can of Crescent Rolls.  Unroll one triangle.  And with a sharp knife do a simple cut-out of the ALAC logo dog.  Then make several skinny, noodles with the remaining triangle and drape them across the body of the dog.  Don’t forget the tail!  Bake at 375 degrees, according to the directions on the can.  You can even achieve color variations by how long you bake the edible pack!!  For their eyes, I simply used part of a chocolate chip.  But you could use icing or a cut raisin.  Just have fun!  Accessorize!  They are Apso-lutely Delicious!!  Please share your “kennel” photos!!
