New mysteries featured at Dogwise…

Has anyone else read dog mystery books ? This week Dogwise is featuring dog mystery authors:

The dog mystery book phenomenon really took off about fifteen years ago when such talented writers like Susan Conant, Virginia Lanier, Laurien Berenson and Sue Henry were able to combine their love and interest in dogs with a love of mystery. Each of these authors wrote several books, and many of you have become devoted fans of one or more of them. With the summer “light reading” season approaching us, and knowing that you folks who camp out at dog shows need something to read, we thought it was time to highlight some of the mystery books from newer authors who are each building a following. To tempt you, each of these four featured books are marked down 20% for the coming week.

Dog at Sea by J.F. Englert. The third in his series of fun mysteries featuring Randolph, a sophisticated Black Lab.

A Breed Apart by by Pierre Davis. More of a traditional mystery, a hard luck detective must track down a Black Lab (just a coincidence!) who holds the key to a gripping mystery.

Heir of the Dog by Judi McCoy. The second in her Dog Walker series, features her terrier mix Ellie and a Central Park murder.

Dog On It by  Spencer Quinn. The first in his Chet and Bernie mystery series. Chet is the canine narrator (a black dog…), Bernie the down on his luck private investigator. A New York Times best seller.

Motion sickness

Another of the many useful things I picked from Dr. Yin’s book was advice on motion sickness. Pfizer makes a produce called Cerenia. It should be given 2 hours before leaving, but the cool thing about it is it lasts for 24 hours. So, it can be given the night before a car ride. Here’s some testimonials from pet owners.

Manners Minder

Recently I was able to get my hands on a copy of Low Stress Handling, Restraint and Behavior Modification of Dogs & Cats: Techniques for Developing Patients Who Love Their Visits.

It’s a text book designed for veterinarians and vet techs with excellent illustrations on handling techniques, incorporating operant conditioning principles. It’s now on my want list for my library. Unfortunately the DVD was missing. Dr. Yin also illustrates canine body language and how humans can better understand what the dog is ‘saying’.

One of the things mentioned in her book was the Manners Minder.

Here’s what The Pet Online has to say about the product:

Remote Reward Dog Training System is an incredibly useful dog training aid for all dog owners with innovative and unique design. This new remote dog training aid lets you control your pets behavior using obedience commands issued by a hand-held remote. MannersMinder Remote Reward Dog Training System reward your dogs good behavior instantly byremote control, and it automatically feeds a treat every few minutes while you are gone. You can always combine your dogs favorite treats with this remote reward training system. The MannersMinder System includes: Hand-held remote that can operate on 4 separate channels, and which allows you to work from a distance of up to 100 ft and even through walls. Target training wand with detachable base to teach tricks, heeling, and jumping. Two treat dispenser disks for different sized kibble or treats of uniform small sizes. Dr. Yins illustrated training manual and DVD. Rugged, dog-proof housing measures 16 x 7 x 8 inches; it weighs 3.5 lbs. and is remarkably stable. A standard outlet with the included AC adapter; alternatively, it will run for about four months on 4 D batteries. The remote control runs on an included 23A-12V battery. How MannersMinder Remote Reward Training System Works: Manners Minder replaces the pets old bowl, holding and dispensing your dogs kibble. Food can be dispensed by remote control or automatically in programmed intervals .

Dr. Yin had several photos showing the Manners Minder attached to a dog crate, with a treat being dispensed on intervals while the owner was gone. Great way to keep a dog entertained when the owner is gone!

Best haircuts ever!

And from Katy:

Hi Debby,
Thanks so much for all the good info regarding Apso grooming!
I got my Coat King, slicker brush and greyhound comb on Thursday, spent most of Friday (it seemed like!) working on Wyatt.
Sadie was easy and Zeke only needed a “once-through”.  Today they all got baths and finished up their haircuts.  They look soooo good!
Stripping out the undercoat, especially on Wyatt, made all the difference!  You can actually feel Wyatt’s ribs now!  Sadie’s hair is lying down and even parts down the middle!  Zeke is just gorgeous.  All three tools are just invaluable; it made the difference between being able to groom them successfully, and struggling all day.  I only needed the clippers to do their belly.  I’m very confident that I’ll be able to keep their hair longer, and them looking like the beautiful Apsos they are, now.  Thanks again!
